Anney's Closet - a great partnership for CHPP

Anney’s Closet is a wonderful resource for the youth served by our Care Home Parenting Program (CHPP) as well as other young women aging out of care and/or leaving group homes. CHPP is a program which helps young women who are pregnant or in the early months of parenting (aged 16-21) through a combination of housing, life skills training and counselling. The program specifically supports women who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Through supported independent living in a stable and caring environment, the young moms can acquire the skills needed to reach their potential as independent women and skilled parents. The photo on this page shows one of our participants who benefitted from Anney's Closet,

Operating out of a storage locker donated by West Shore U-Lock, this project is part of the Westshore Soroptimist Club.  Soroptimist is an international organization founded in 1921 and is comprised of business and professional women who work to improve the social and economic lives of underserved women and girls in local communities and throughout the world.  Anney’s Closet was inspired by Anney Ardiel who is a professional downsizer for seniors and was created as a “free store” that is ‘stocked’ with household items donated by downsizing seniors, friends of Soroptimists, and other donors. It officially opened in June 2013.

The process begins with a referral by staff in the Care Home Parenting Program who then arrange a visit to Anney’s Closet. When they are ready to leave the Care Home Program the young mom goes with staff for a private shopping experience. This free store is accessed by appointment only.

At Anney’s Closet they find a variety of small household items, as well as some furniture for setting up their future homes. Recently a conversation about the benefits of rocking circles resulted in 6 rocking chairs being donated to our Parenting Program. And Joan Jackson and her staff are looking for more! This is a fabulous resource for our youth and we are extremely pleased to have their support. Thank you!
